So much going on

AHHH, I haven't posted in over a month. I haven't abandon crafting, I just haven't been posting things that I have been crafting. The real reason I haven't been posting is because I have a new job. I went to school for Architecture and had been laid off from a job a loved about a year and a half ago. I took a job in March that I was way over qualified for and I hadn't been happy there. I've been working on this job since September, I just started this past Monday. I am a LEED admin (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for an engineering firm. LEED goes above and beyond the standard building codes to promote Green Design. Basically I work with the HVAC engineers to document the credits in their projects and submit them to the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) for review. So far I love it.

Like I said before I haven't stopped crafting so I will leave you with one of the projects I've finished since my last post. They are a pair of lounge pants, pattern by Amy Butler from her In Stitches book.

Aerial Yoga

I've now been to 3 aerial yoga classes and a workshop. I think I might have found my new exercise. I was a dancer throughout elementary school and high school, once I got into college and architecture took over my life I had to stop. Going to a small tech school in Boston with a major in architecture didn't leave much time or opportunity for dance. Luckily in my senior year the consortium in which my college belonged started a dance group. After college it was hard to find a dance studio that fit what I was looking for. So I stopped looking.

I was very interested when I found out about aerial yoga and began searching for a studio. I found one about 45 mins from my house. I signed up for my first class, which ended up being a level 2 class, when I signed up there were no levels. I had so much fun even though it was very intense.

The workshop I took today was a beginning workshop which helped a lot. Below are a just a couple of things we worked on today.

Painting: Living room

I had been wanting to paint the living room since we moved in over a year ago but just hadn't. I decided this weekend that I was going to do it. I had taken Friday off from work, stopped at Home Depot on my way home from my appointments, picked up the paint and a few other supplies that were needed. Here are my before pictures:

Prepped and ready to go. It would have been easier to move everything out but we don't have a lot of space in which to move everything.

The initial plan was to do it all Friday night. However, mother nature had her own plans, the primer took way longer to dry because of the rain we got Friday night. We let the first coat of primer dry over night, N and I tackled the 2nd coat of primer Saturday morning.

1st coat done, just need to touch up a few spots.

There are still a few spots to touch up. At about 11 pm Saturday night we decided that we wanted to paint the trim. We painted a small spot behind the couch to see if we liked it in the morning and went to bed. We still need another coat of paint on the trim but were tired of painting on Sunday morning.

The color is Bayside by Behr. We rent our house or I probably would have used Sherman Williams paint. I got a deal on the paint because HD was out of the Premium Paint. So I got the Premium Plus Ultra, Paint & Primer in one for the price of the regular. My husband was actually impressed with the paint. I was happy that I only had to use 1 coat plus touch ups.

We used Vanilla Milkshake by Behr for the trim. I already had it in the house, it was their regular "Premium" paint. It doesn't settle out as nice as the Premium Plus Ultra does.

For a primer we used Kilz 2 latex primer, I had bought it to do a few small projects around the house. We did not like the way it coated.

I think this has quenched my thirst to paint for awhile but I'm hoping to paint the kitchen cabinets white soon.

DIY Tray

I found a couple of tray's at A.C. Moore and painted it using my favorite color paint. I then picked a design from my cricut cartridges, cut out a design and mod podged it on to the tray. I also mod podged the entire tray to seal it. Looks like I was a bad blogger and didn't take a picture of my piece before.

The design on the tray comes from the cartridge "Home Decor", the paint color is "Peacock Tail" by Behr.

I have a series obession with this color, but I think it deserves it's own post. Yes, that is how much I love this color.

I will be doing the tile bottom as soon as I find the tile I'm looking for which could be awhile.

On a completely different topic, I had my third aerial yoga class on Saturday. I was the only one in class so my teacher taught me some more advanced things. I learned foot locks and hand holds. I love the exercise it gives me. However, it's been a long time since I've had any physical exercise and I hurt, a lot.

3-Button Sweatshirt Tutorial

This started with my obsession with Pinterest. I came across this Pin for a 3 Button Sweatshirt from Etsy. I did my normal thing and say, I can make this. I searched high and low for a tutorial and came up empty handed. I thought, well it can't be that hard to make from an old sweatshirt. While it isn't an exact replica, I'm very happy with the outcome.

I tried to take pictures from start to finish so you can try it yourself. If you get lost please ask and I can try to guide you through.

This is my finished project.

Here is how I did it:

I started with a large sweatshirt that I picked up from the Salvation Army for $2 (I figured if I totally screwed up it wouldn't be a big loss.)

I took my seam ripper to it, taking off the pouch, bottom cuff, sleeves and sleeve cuffs. Note: You do not have to take off the sleeves however I liked the looks of the seams on the outside.

I cut the front of the sweatshirt up the middle and was left with something looking a little like this:

I wrapped the front so the 2 pieces overlapped each other and pinned in place. I then pinned and chalked the sides.

I basted the sides, I recommend basting a different color thread than the shirt and different from the color you will be using. It will be easier if you want to take the stitch out. 

Then I had my husband help me to pin the sleeves to take in.

I chalked the basting stitch to see it better on the black material. 

 

Using my chalk line, I started sewing. The material on the right side of my chalk line is going to be cut off.  

 

 I cut off all the excess material and sewed the sleeves back on. Originally my plan was to take the shoulders up, but the sleeves went long enough to be full length if I had done that.

Then I decided on button placement. I chalked the outsides of the buttons so I can use my buttonhole maker on my sewing machine.

Once my button holes were complete, I pinned in place once more and chalked through the buttonholes to place my buttons. I hand sewed on my buttons.

                                             

 I need to wash it so that it takes the chalk off the shirt.

I think I want to find a pattern for a sweatshirt and modify it so I can make it from new material.
